Platinum Pen Company was founded in Japan in 1919 by Shunichi Nakata, and continues to be one of the three most respected pen companies in Japan today. They manufacture extremely fine nibs to broader and music type nibs. They are well known for their Preppy pens which are lower cost pens of extremely high quality through to high-end pens and beautiful maki-e art pens which please the eye of a collector. In 2011, Platinum fountain pens became well known for its famous slip-and-seal mechanism pens, which are designed to prevent the pen from drying out when the screw type cap is left capped for long periods of time. The Platinum fountain pens use a propriety cartridge or one can use bottled ink.
